Emergency Services

For the convenience and peace-of-mind for our clients, we ask that you call ahead in an emergency so we are prepared for you to come in.

For after-hours emergencies, call The Veterinary Teaching Hospital at Virginia Tech (540) 231-4621 or Town and County in Christiansburg (540) 382-5042. If your pet needs additional care or a recheck after an emergency visit at either of these locations, please call us at (540) 674-1010.

When Should I Seek Emergency Care for My Pet?

The easiest answer as to whether you should seek emergency care for a pet is when you feel his or her medical condition is serious and cannot wait. However, the following general situations should help you determine if you need to seek out emergency care for your pet:

-Difficulty breathing
-Acute abdominal swelling
-Electric shock
-Excessive vomiting or diarrhea
-Excessive bleeding
-Exhibits symptoms of heat stroke
-Repetitive and prolonged seizures
-Accidents
-Snake bites
-High or low temperature (more than 104 or less than 100 degrees)
-Unable to urinate or defecate

If Your Pet Has Ingested Something Harmful?

If you suspect your pet has ingested a toxic or harmful substance, you can call ASPCA Pet Poison Control for immediate advice.

A consultation fee may apply.

You will be asked detailed questions about the source of the toxic exposure, so have package/label instructions with you. You may also be asked questions about your pet like breed, age, weight, and underlying conditions.  Have something to write with in case they give you information to pass along to your vet.
